Successful export of machines from the USA to the EU — thanks to the correct CE marking
Anyone wishing to export machinery, production equipment, and other technical products to the European Union can be confronted with a number of hurdles in the process because machines and other technical products must bear a CE mark. Moreover, various European regulations and a multitude of European standards govern a wide range of applications.
Assuring compliance with these standards could prove to be complex for US companies. They may find themselves having to deal with unexpected questions and issues such as hidden exemptions or the European understanding of functional safety.
The CE marking is not solely a bureaucratic hurdle, however; it can also be regarded as an opportunity for the successful development of the European market.
Customers are more willing to put their trust in a strong brand because they associate strong mechanical engineering brands with durability, reliability, and safety.
The experts at EAC will show how you can take advantage of the European regulatory provisions to enhance the strength of your brand.
EAC safely guides you past the CE trap
The CE marking and the declaration of conformity issued in conjunction with it mean that the machine or the technical product complies with the specifications of any applicable regulations and European technical standards. One special feature is that the manufacturer (or its authorized representative) may issue the declaration of conformity itself for most machines and technical products, a so-called self-certification.
Once the CE mark has been affixed to a machine, the product can be imported into the European Economic Area.
The import inspections are limited to determining the correctness of the shipping and customs documents and the issuance of the declaration of conformity in accordance with formal requirements. In other words, no one checks to see whether the machine really complies with the required standards.
Does that sound too good to be true? Unfortunately, this is no reason to sound the all-clear. There is a risk that a possible defect in the machine will not become apparent until operational startup or — even later — during ongoing operation. And in the worst case, an accident involving serious personal injury may occur because the machine’s safety features are defective. Both of these worst-case scenarios result in an immediate production stop, costly subsequent improvement, recourse payments, the involvement of assessors, and the possibility of legal disputes.
A trap no US producer wants to fall into. The EAC experts will guide you securely past the CE trap.
